貓咪與野生動物：如何阻止你的貓成為獵殺者
我們總覺得貓咪既可愛又愛撒嬌，但事實上牠們是天生的掠食者，擅長捕獵鳥類和小型動物。貓咪擁有出色的視力、聽力和嗅覺，也很會悄無聲息地追蹤獵物。遺憾的是，攻擊野生動物的情況相當常見，貓咪更被認為導致全球多達 33 個物種滅絕。
 
根據 Australian Geographic，澳洲野生動物保育協會估計，每隻自由活動的貓每晚可捕獵 5-30 隻動物，而「貓是美國原生動物死亡最主要的人為相關原因，影響甚至大於棲地破壞、殺蟲劑、污染及車輛碰撞…美國自由活動的家貓和流浪貓每年可能殺死 24 億隻鳥類及 123 億隻哺乳類動物，其中大多是原生物種，而非褐鼠等外來物種。」

身為負責任的貓主人，我們有責任確保保護野生動物，尤其是受到保護或已瀕臨絕種的原生物種。您可以採取許多措施來減少攻擊事件——

鈴鐺與反光鏡
保護野生動物最簡單的方法，就是在貓咪的項圈上加裝鈴鐺和反光鏡。鈴鐺會提醒野生動物貓咪正在靠近，讓牠們有機會逃離。反光鏡也能藉由反射光線提供預警。您也可以使用配有聲納蜂鳴器的項圈，它會發出高頻聲響來提醒鳥類，但不會干擾人類或貓咪。

絕育
為貓咪進行絕育手術，能降低牠們四處遊走、打架和狩獵的可能性。

夜間管理
貓咪大多是夜行性的獵人，尋找獵物時可能會走很遠。夜間、黃昏前 1 小時及黎明後 1 小時，請讓貓咪待在室內或封閉空間中。
 
圍欄與限制活動
雖然家貓並非為了取得食物而狩獵，但有些貓咪仍比其他貓咪更想捕獵。此外，您居住的地區可能有大量野生動物。如果符合其中任何一種情況，您應考慮白天也讓貓咪待在室內，或在陽台或花園設置大小合適的戶外封閉區域。您需要為貓咪提供飲水、貓砂盆、遮風避雨處、寢具、棲架、玩具和活動設施。
 
管教與訓練
由於狩獵、跟蹤和撲擊是貓咪的本能，這種方法的效果可能有限，但仍有助於勸阻牠們。當您發現貓咪正在捕獵野生動物時，可朝牠噴水，或使用特殊氣味的驅避噴霧。

    I keep an eye out for my kitties when they go out under supervision, but not all cat owners do. HOWEVER ... I feel cats are getting a really unfair rap. Most birds and small mammals are disappearing because of habitat loss, pesticides, pollution, etc - ALL caused by humans. But cats get most of the blame, because heck, it's only cats. And they make very nice scapegoats for our idiocy.

    Sure, cats hunt, but they've been around for 10,000 years. It's only in the last 100 years that species are disappearing. Because of us.

    I'd like to see the assault on house and feral cats be rethought because it is contributing to horrible abuse, torture, and killing. And it's escalating.

    My 8 years old son also loves outdoor archery, he always gets ready to go to try something new with compound bows and arrows. I would really appreciate the author of this post for sharing his experience with us.
